Actually, there is a fourth -- Raf Simons, who in a parking garage on Sunday night -- on a platform made of crushed soda cans -- superbly articulated how contemporary culture has become a thoughtless Pac-Man, gobbling up products as well as references. It's rare for a designer to make a political statement in fashion and still offer wearable clothes" -- Cathy Horyn 2002 Raf Simons SS03 "Consumed" Penelope Tree Shark Hoodie in blue over black. SS03 "Consumed" is Raf's quiet observation of consumerism, or to be "consumed" by consumerism -- Its effects on youth; Their impartial interaction with such commercial entities and the molding of adolescent identities rooting from the collective indifference towards the squandering influence of commercial identities. This is the iconic and highly sought after hooded sweatshirt featuring Penelope Tree, from Truman Capote's Black & White ball, and Steven Spielberg's mechanical shark from Jaws in the backdrop, with "Diamond Co-Opted" written underneath the kangaroo pocket. The Penelope Tree print featured here on the hoodie derives from a picture which served as a pivotal point in fashion, youth culture and high society America. The original black and white picture has beanpole figured Tree staring dauntingly out in the distance from amongst a group of middle age socialites. This grabbed the attention of prominent figures of fashion and despite strong opposition from Penelope's father, as she was 16, Penelope Tree became the quintessential swinging sixties icon which galvanized female youth culture and movements at the time. Furthermore, inspired a generation of artists and designers to look at youth culture for inspiration and solidified the Youthquake movement. As for Raf Simons, and this is purely out of speculation, Penelope Tree holds a special place of interest as his source of inspiration will be and has been the youth.

This is the 20th season for Raf Simons and he initially sought to pay a tribute to his revered past collections but he and his team simply didn't feel that it was "relevant" to do anything old, instead opted to keep doing something new. This however was an homage to his influences Helmut Lang and Maison Margiela.     Raf Simons "OG" Velcro Strap Hi Top with croc emboss. This is the Italian made version which slightly differs in features and quality from the current Portuguese made Velcros. Embossed in a croc like pattern. "Raf Simons", while slightly faded, is embossed on the velcro strap's ends. "R" is also embossed on the tongue and pull tab. 7/10 Condition. The outer has some decent damage if closely inspected. The inner has some dye bleeding. Heel drag, for a shoe this old is surprisingly decent. Creasing. Size 41.

    FW01 "Riot Riot Riot" Waxed Pants. "Riot Riot Riot" is a hard turn for Raf Simons which  laid down fresh foundations for his new designs that sought to stray away from the lanky and slim lined classic wear to layers, band imagery, music references and capturing attitudes and lifestyles. The entire collection was rather unwieldy and was heavily influenced by eastern european style which relied on heavy layering during colder days. Garments that represented protest, "riots", turmoil like balaclavas, bombers, wrapped chains and face masks were reappropriated and meshed into extravagant bulky fits. These wax pants have a short factory inseam. The wax is extremely heavy and embedded into the fabric. The fabric itself feels almost like duct tape. 7.5/10 condition. Wax creasing, erosion and inevitable wear. Size 48, fits a 30.

    Raf Simons SS15 Extended Silhouette Longsleeve. One of the more graphic heavy recent seasons by Raf is a peep into his past memories. Vogue quoted Raf describing his collection, "Like mood boards you'd pin your favorite images to", which pretty much speaks for the entire collection outside of the more couture jackets. The back and front of the runway pieces feature prints of koi fish, Raf's stay in Japan, Raf's earlier life, friends and family, Mt Fuji, an astronaut, mementos that Raf has a deep personal connection with, arranged like a collage. The prints are physically screened and printed over each other, having a very slight amount of depth and real touch to them. This is the rare extended, big silhouette jersey cotton version. 9/10 condition. Size M

"R" Raf Simons logo on pull tab. Margom sole. This model, along side the Low top, Astronaut and the legendary Vandal were cycled in different styles throughout the mid to late 2000's. 8/10 condition.     Raf Simons Fw2008 "Rothko" Block Turtleneck Sweater in the original runway orange base colourway. Raf's deep roots with artists lead his many creations to play homage to artistic works and pieces, old and new. This piece is a tribute to abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. With a few colour blocks, layers and layers of paint, and the careful transitioning between said colours Rothko was able to convey a deep, cerebral, emotional expression through his work, which Raf captured so finely by applying Rothko works on a delicate and soft mohair blend weave. FW08 Raf focused on intricate and complex melange fabrics including mohair mixed fabric, spun wool, hessian blends and layered tweeds. This piece is no exception, with close inspection the fabric is incredibly intricate with a diverse range of colours. From afar to a viewer, this effect allows for more deep, vibrant colours as the dynamic range of colours bloom in light. 9/10 condition. Size 46, long sleeves slim body, can fit a slim m or s.

    “Today’s living environment is about consuming as well as being consumed; some suggest this could lead to an apocalyptic end, while others, particularly younger generations, take this reality as their cue to create new, more viable and flexible personas.” - Raf Simons Show Notes. Raf Simons SS03 "Consumed" Tank in the white colourway. SS03 is one of Raf's more well received collections by the "graphics" type of Raf collectors and possibly the most iconic. As the passage from the show notes above states, this is Raf's introspective dive into his interpretation of consumerism and identity with younger generations. Slapped on the tank is the 'consumed' graphic which was inked on the chests of some of the runway models with familiar commercial logos. This is a much looser tank compared to his more common ultraslim fitted tanks. 8/10 condition. Size 48 and fits true, slightly loose. Fits an L fitted.

    Raf Simons FW05 Longsleeve "The Cure" 82-83 Tour Dates Longsleeve. Black tee features a print of Robert Smith, lead singer of legendary post-punk band "The Cure", and European tour dates from the 1982 -83 'Four Explicit Moments' and 'The Pornography' tour. FW05 was titled "History of My World" featuring tailoring from a futuristic perspective with slim and boxy uppers, scrunched and tucked mid sections and pleated and baggy bottoms. This is yet another graphic which stemmed from Raf's study of the youth's relationship with prime era post-punk/kraftwerk music, with other collections' graphics/designs borrowed from Joy Division, Krafwerk, Black Flag and Bauhaus. 8/10 condition.     Raf Simons SS09 "Christopher Wool" Typographic 72" x 38" Towel. Raf starts the drawing board with a foundation of an artist's ethos once again. The low key SS09 collection featured typographic designs on vests, shirts, pullovers with American artist "Christopher Wool"-like art. Some of the designs featured embroidery with unfinished hems and strings falling from the fabric. Assuming from the runway, Raf seems to be taken by Christopher Wool's impactful word play such as his piece "Apocalypse Now" which stated "Sell the house. Sell the Car. Sell the kids.". Raf conjoined the style and simply applied youthful axioms, motifs, lyrics and mottos blown up on garments. From this collection came out a limited quantity of towels in 3 styles. This model features the words "There Is a Crack in Everything, That’s How the Light Gets In" which are lyrics from celebrated artist Leonard Cohen's "Anthem". 7/10 condition. Some pulling and scruffs on towel, but overall displayable condition.

Possibly on of the first graphics Raf has ever designed, features 3 patches on left arm with a strong possibility influencing the recent SS16 collection 20 years later. FW96 campaign established a foundation for Raf's classic and sartorial vibe up to the 2000's. This is also the season which the signature "R" turtleneck was born. The video for the campaign consisted of rich adolescents hanging out playing Donkey Kong and smoking an unfathomable amount of cigarettes after their parents' party. A start for Raf Simons capturing the angst and turmoil surrounding adolescents or the "Fourth Sex". 9/10 condition. Size 46, fits an xs-s.

The low key SS09 collection featured typographic designs on vests, shirts, pullovers with American artist “Christopher Wool”-like art. Some of the designs featured embroidery with unfinished hems and strings falling from the fabric. For this one out of three iteration towel, we have a simple Christopher Wool-like "R" for "Raf Simons". 9/10 condition. Comes with original box.

    Raf Simons SS06 "Icaris Surgit" Long Weave Top. Simons throughout his golden decade never really had a consistent trajectory when it comes to his creative narrative, but yet managed to excel at every corner he touched. At the near end of his aggressive, youth inspired era which derived strong motifs from the awkward menace of adolescence, Raf Simons's "Icaris Surgit" drew inspiration from Greek mythological figure Icarus. Fabrics were light, airy and swayed with the lightest touch of wind. Sheer, laser-cut and thin cloths were cut into large silhouettes and oversized cummerbund pants. Footwear was shaped and worked into strapped messes resembling gladiator sandals. SS06 was the start of Raf's technical prowess and continued such endeavors throughout the remainder of the decade. Top is a three tier design with two of the three tiers emulating a crotched weave. Intricate detailing of colours are weaved into the mix. Size 44, but fits very oversized. 9/10 condition. Can be layered over other tops.
